Volver,
con la frente marchita,
las nieves del tiempo
platearon mi sien…

Martin’s blog (Mi Buenos Aires Querido) was named after a tango, so I decided to follow his lead. The 4 lines of the refrain make reference to someone returning to Buenos Aires after 20 years, now looking a little bit older. I moved to the US about 15 years ago and have returned many times to visit. However, I have never gone back to participate in an event like this with so many renowned speakers from the MySQL community. The list include many people with whom I have worked with over the past decade. Being able to present side-by-side with them in my native city is a great honor, sort of professional home coming (“volver”) for myself, hence my choice of tango.

Martin’s talk will be the keynote Thursday morning: Write Optimization is the Right Read Optimization where he will describe how breakthroughs in indexing technology are reshaping the database world. .

Sheeri Cabral and myself will be co-presenting a tutorial Tuesday afternoon about Monitoring MySQL. We will be expanding on presentations we both did separately at past events and during a couple of episodes of the OurSQL podcast. My sections will be in Spanish and hers in English, if anything, it should be entertaining to listen to the translators.

I will have another session on Wednesday afternoon where I will talk about Monitoring MySQL with SNMP where I’ll explain some SNMP basics and then go on to talk about how to customize the SNMP agent using the “pass persist” protocol.

With more than 200 attendees already registered for the event, this will be an exciting experience of which I’m proud to be playing a part.

I hope to see you there. If you are interested in checking out the full lyrics for both tangos with an approximate English translation, visit here for Volver and here for Mi Buenos Aires Querido.
